ABOUT THE ALBUM
To Hildegard von Bingen, the purpose of music was to reflect the pure magnificence of paradise, and its reflection in the beauty of nature on Earth. At once elegiac and uplifting, von Bingen’s haunting compositions served to restore and nourish those who lived in her monastery.

Although Hildegard von Bingen is one of the first known European composers, whose credits may well include writing the first opera, her body of work was widely overlooked until a few decades ago. These chants require a singer with a range of up to two octaves, as well as impeccable intonation, as they contain pitches outside of our standard twelve-tone system.

“In this great diversity of musical colors and explorations, we return endlessly to the same unquenchable desire: to sing all the facets of our relation to the Essential which is in us all, here and now, in sound and in silence.” - Catherine Braslavsky and Joseph Rowe
