This anthology features chants from the two great traditions of Christianity, the Orient and the Occident. It is a unique take on Gregorian and Orthodox chant with performances from the finest artists, including the Benedictine Monks of Silos, Lycourgos Angelopoulos & the Byzantine Choir of Greece, the Mount Athos Choir of the Monastery of Simonos Petra, and Divna & the Melodi Choir among others.
Traditional religious chant, be it Byzantine, Znamenny or Gregorian, is always closely linked to the word. The word is the essential part, the melody being an ornament that helps facilitate its assimilation. Beyond this technical definition, these chants are part of the liturgy. They praise God. The words are sacred, almost always taken from the Holy Scriptures, particularly the Psalms. It is music born and inspired by the revealed texts. These are not chants written to praise the Lord but chants born from prayer and contemplation. Therefore, when singing them, a monk should try to express what he is going through and what he wants to accomplish through his vocation.
Channel of spirituality, traditional chant not only embellishes the liturgy but also shapes the soul of the one who performs it; chant conceals the richness of the doctrine and of life in general and, through immersion, so to speak, enhances one’s spiritual growth.
