Devonté Hynes Releases Soundtrack for Paul Schrader’s Master Gardener starring Joel Edgerton and Sigourney Weaver
Devonté Hynes has shared his original score for director and writer Paul Schrader’s new movie, Master Gardener, opening in theaters this weekend from Magnolia Pictures. Premiering at last year’s Venice International Film Festival, the movie stars Joel Edgerton as a meticulous horticulturist Narvel Roth, working at an estate called Gracewood Gardens owned by wealthy dowager Norma (played by Sigourney Weaver). When he’s told to take on her troubled great-niece (played by Quintessa Swindell) as an apprentice, his life is thrown into chaos and dark secrets from his past emerge. It’s the first movie written and directed by Schrader since 2021’s The Card Counter starring Oscar Isaac, and is the third in his recent trilogy beginning with 2017’s First Reformed starring Ethan Hawke.
The 28-track collection features original score recorded by Hynes in close collaboration with Schrader, as well as the film & album’s transcendent closing ballad “Space and Time” performed by Mereba. Originally penned by Kentucky-based songwriter S.G. Goodman, “Space and Time” was selected by Schrader and arranged by Hynes specifically for the film.
