Música

Based on writer, director and star Rudy Mancuso, Música is a coming-of-age love story that follows an aspiring creator with synesthesia, who must come to terms with an uncertain future, while navigating the pressures of love, family and his Brazilian culture in Newark, New Jersey.

With music by the film’s director, cowriter and star Rudy Mancuso, the album features original tracks written by Mancuso for his semi-autobiographical film, which the multi-hyphenate characterizes as an “anti-musical musical.” In a departure from traditional musicals, Mancuso wanted the film to seamlessly interweave his music with dialogue and diegetic sounds, prompting the film team to perform and record a bulk of the music live on-set rather than in a studio setting. The music itself often pays homage to Mancuso’s Brazilian heritage, with samba drums and the cuica creating a soundscape inspired by bossa nova and Brazilian funk. Available everywhere now, the resulting 18-track collection echoes the rich and vibrant soundtrack that is Mancuso’s life and career.

Of the soundtrack, Mancuso says, “We had this idea of using music and film and storytelling in a way we’ve never seen. It’s happening, it’s interwoven with the dialogue and the story. It’s not a separation. It’s playing with the diegetic versus non-diegetic conventions: Is that the score I’m hearing or is it happening in the scene?”

Música is now playing exclusively on Prime Video.
