In the Fade (German: Aus dem Nichts) is a 2017 German drama film directed by Fatih Akin. It was selected to compete for the Palme d’Or in the main competition section at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival. At Cannes, Diane Kruger won the Best Actress award. It was selected as the German entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 90th Academy Awards, making the December shortlist. The film is also nominated for a Golden Globe in the Best Foreign Film category.
The film is named after a song by the American rock band Queens of the Stone Age, whose lead singer, Josh Homme, wrote the film’s dark score.
The film tells the story of Katja (Diane Kruger).Out of nowhere, her life falls apart when her husband Nuri and little son Rocco are killed in a bomb attack. The mind numbing search for the perpetrators and reasons behind the senseless killing complicate Katja’s painful mourning, opening wounds and doubts. Danilo, a lawyer and Nuri’s best friend, represents Katja in the eventual trial against the two suspects: a young couple from the neo-Nazi scene. The trial pushes Katja to the edge, but there’s simply no alternative for her: she wants justice.
Magnolia Pictures is opening In The Fade in theaters on December 22, 2017.
