About the Soundtrack
South Africa’s official nomination for the 78th Annual Academy Awards in
the
foreign language film award category, “Tsotsi” is one young man's
story of
redemption, set amidst the sprawling ghetto of Johannesburg, South Africa.
This world pumps with the raw energy of "Kwaito music" - South Africas’
answer to American Hip Hop. “Kwaito kids are made from hunger, abuse, no
father, violence & guns,” says Zola. “Now as adults we must change
the game
for the better. Now we must change everything we are made from.” In addition
to the compelling beats of Zola’s contributions such as “Mdlwembe”
and “It
Is Your Life,” the Milan Records soundtrack includes Kwaito artists
Mafikizolo, Ishmael, Unathi and Mark Kilian & Paul Hepker featuring Vusi
Mahlasela. Bonginkosi Dlamini, more commonly known as Zola, is a poet, actor
and musician who grew up in Soweto, in the ghetto called Zola. Over the last
few years, he has emerged in South Africa as the superstar of Kwaito. In
2000, he released his debut album “Mdlwembe” to massive critical acclaim,
followed by two other albums of Kwaito music, “Khokhovula” and “Bhambatha.”
Zola has won many South Africa music awards including: Artist of the Year
2002; Best Soundtrack (“Yizo Yizo”); Best music video (“Ghetto
Scandalous”);
and Best Kwaito album (“Mdlwembe”). In 2003 Zola starred in his own
hit TV
show “Zola 7”and has acted alongside Taye Diggs in the film “Drum.”
